News On April 22nd, Rhino
Records will be releasing newly remastered versions of Sorry Ma, Forgot
to Take Out the Trash, Stink, Hootenanny, and Let It Be. But
even better, tacked on at the end are wonderful unreleased bonus
tracks. And if that weren't enough, expanded versions of Tim, Pleased
to Meet Me, Don't Tell a Soul, and All Shook Down are all coming later
this year. You can read the whole press release and see all the new
tracklists in the press release.
Maybe forty people have started writing books about the Replacements, but
Jim Walsh of the Minneapolis Star Tribune is the first one to finish one.
For that alone, I say bravo to All Over But The Shouting: An Oral
History. Walsh lets the world tell the story of The Replacements for
him through quotes and interviews from the years they were together and
beyond. In the end, we are blessed with a text version of an oral
documentary that leaves the original sources' words and stories intact.
So if you've got a birthday coming up, or your lover is stumped about what
to do for Valentine's Day since Best Buy is sold out of Wii's, here's one
for the list. (You can check out the promo
poster, press release,
an
excerpt, and even a myspace page.)
Meanwhile, the Guns n' Roses album with Tommy Stinson, Chinese
Democracy, is reportedly finally finished after fourteen years and the
band is in negotiations with Geffen for its release. The problem is the
album's production rang up a tab of $13 million - about as much as "Star
Wars" if you don't count 30 years of inflation - and now Geffen is trying
to figure out what it will take to make this epic sell as many copies as
"Thriller", a daunting task especially in the age of downloading. (I
think including coupons for Guitar Center, IHOP, Performance Auto Zone,
and partypoker.com would hit about every target demographic. Hey, music
industry - you lookin' for a new revenue model? I'm sayin' this is it.)
If you didn't hear it before, there is a Replacements tribute
record stuffed with 23 covers from (mostly) high-energy pop-punk
bands. It's called "We'll Inherit The Earth" and out by 1234Go! records.
Especially check out the samples of versions of "Little Mascara", "Left of
the Dial", "Nowhere Is My Home", and "Portland".
So if you've got a Replacements story - about the band or about yourself
and the songs - send it in for the
next issue! Stay warm, unless you are also in Switzerland, in which
case, come over for a sunny spring BBQ.
